Vocaloid is a voice synthesizer engine produced by Yamaha Corporation, which allows to synthesize vocals by typing melody and lyrics in the software to obtain an artificial singing voice. Since Vocaloid’s commercialization in the early 2000s many add-ons have been created for the software, an reached worldwide success with the release of Hatsune Miku in 2007, that led to an incredible success due to the character’s image, becoming a real cultural phenomenon of worldwide success. While Miku is not the first add on created by Crypton, she’s the first of the Character Vocal Series, which explicitly connects the character on the box to the voice offered by the software. Hatsune Miku is still to this day the most famous persona of the Vocaloid roster, which is formed by fictional characters whose vocals are sampled from real artists, usually singers or voice actors.

Thanks to the great versatility of the software, both professional and emerging musicians are using Vocaloid to give voice to their songs. This gave the opportunity to many talented artists to expose their creativity, resulting in a large list of valid (and now well known) composers that became a constant presence in the Vocaloid scene. Wether you may like the sound of an artificial voice or not, it’s undeniable that certain Vocaloid songs have solid and well built instrumentals, and you should try to explore this world with an open mind: you’ll surely find many valid tracks and composers you’ll love.

Below you can find a list of all the most valuable Vocaloid songs, composers and characters that represent a great start for all the newcomers:. After that, it’ll be just a matter of time before you get lost in what during these years became a seriously huge scene. Have fun!
