Vocaloid is a voice synthesizer engine produced by Yamaha Corporation, which allows to synthesize vocals by typing melody and lyrics in the software to obtain an artificial singing voice. Since Vocaloid has been commercialized in the early 2000s there have been a huge number of add-on created for the software, even though the high peak of success can be considered the release of Hatsune Miku during 2007, which led to an incredible success due to the character’s image, becoming a real cultural case of worldwide success featuring many video games, manga and anime productions inspired to her, without counting the huge exposure on broadcasting services such as Nico Nico Douga, YouTube and social networks. While Miku is not the first add on created by Crypton, she’s the first of the Character Vocal Series, which explicitly connects the character on the box to the voice offered by the software. Hatsune Miku is today one of the most famous persona of the roster of characters present in the market, each one representing an add on based on the original Vocaloid engine and sampled from real voices, usually singers or voice actors.

Thanks to the great versatility of the software, both professional and emerging musicians and composers are using Vocaloid to give voice to their songs, spacing from several genres like Pop, Rock, Electronic and relative sub-genres. This gave the opportunity to many talents to expose their creativity, resulting in a large list of valid (and now well known) composers that became a constant presence in the Vocaloid scene, all of them worth listening if you don’t mind hearing songs sang by an artificial voice. Wether you may like it or not, it’s undoubtedly true that Vocaloid songs have solid and well built instrumentals, and we invite to explore this world with open mind: You’ll surely find many valid tracks and composers you’ll love.

The current version of the software is Vocaloid 3, and it’s now available in many languages including Japanese, English, Spanish, Korean and more. Below you can find a list of all the most valuable Vocaloid songs, composers and characters that represent a great start for all the newcomers: After that, it’ll be just a matter of time before you get lost in what during these years became a seriously huge scene. Have fun!
