Symbolically, and traditionally, the characteristics of the post-80’s Idol world are cheesy pop tracks, forced smiles, and generally an overly cheesy aura to please the male audience. After the 2000’s this trend started to fade as producers and groups began to adopt more consistent concepts and, most of all, a far superior quality in music: A few prime examples are Momoiro Clover Z and TOKYO GIRLS’ STYLE. Yet, despite improving quality, the core sound was still largely pop.
Then, in 2010 two groups completely twisted the Idol scene: BABYMETAL and BiS. The first blended Metal sonorities with Idol pop, a surprising and successful formula that heavily influenced and created a new niche in the Idol world that still today sees many groups following this trend, while the latter revolutionized the Idol concept itself, rebelling against the classic and outdated formula, gaining an infamous (yet admired) identity with transgressive concepts considered morally “wrong”, like Music Videos featuring the members naked and lyrics attacking the manufactured Idol industry.
Today, BABYMETAL are touring the world and conquering more and more fans, while BiS sadly disbanded in 2014, but the legacy of both groups created the niche known as “Alternative Idol” that gave birth to many groups worth following. These are acts that incorporate clear and strong influences in their sound (mainly Metal and Rock, but also Jazz and Electronic) with Idol elements, bringing refreshing sonorities and interesting concepts.
