I’ll be honest with you: this is one of my favorite records of the year.
I’ve always been a fan of atmospherical post-rock/metal music, with acts such as Agalloch and Alcest being some of my favorite western artists ever. I love the sadness and beauty drenched in these compositions, and it’s the strongest link I have to the heavier sonorities I used to listen to back in days (before I discovered Japanese music, basically).
MONO conveys the same feelings to me, but in a very unique way. Requiem for Hell is so powerful and filled with strong emotions. Especially the first track, Death in Rebirth, makes me feel like someone is trying to suffocate me for eight minutes, to then loose the grip and say “there you go, now you’re free”. Yeah, I know it sounds awful, but it’s really beautiful when put into music. I can actually feel a clutch to my troath when listening to it.
Life and death, pain and relief, happiness and sadness… MONO’s new record is all of this, and more. A beautiful and haunting experience, a powerful showcase of Music as Art form. Be sure to read my review of “Requiem for Hell” on Electric Bloom Webzine, down here!
